Busting open a Durian

sations at inappropriate moments of late. And look out Mrs. HG, because Mr. HG just heard about the Mimosa Nursery (thanks beer making Scott!), purveyors of exotic fruit trees here in Southern California. From my web research it looks like Mimosa has at least two locations, one in Anaheim and the other at 6270 Allston in Los Angeles. We̵7;re planning an expedition soon . . ....

Loquat Season

For some mysterious reason our corner of Los Angeles has an abundance of loquat trees (Eriobotrya japonica) that, at this time of year, produce prodigious amounts of fruit that mostly goes to waste. Many of these trees live in public spaces, the parkway and people̵7;s front yards making them prime candidates for urban foraging i.e. free food. The tree itself has a vaguely tropical appearance with waxy leaves that look like the sort of plasti...

End of Season Tomato Review

...s raining, that̵7;s how you tell), we̵7;ll review what worked and what didn̵7;t work. The tastiest tomato award goes to the Pineapple variety pictured above. Not only did this heirloom tomato have the best flavor, it was also the prettiest tomato we̵7;ve ever grown, a brilliant yellow with streaks of red in the middle of the fruit when you slice it. And they̵7;re just about as big as a Cadillac Escalade. We saved some seeds a...

Winter Squash Disaster

Those of you who follow this blog may recall last summer̵7;s “squash baby” fiasco.  This year I planted a few Marina di Chioggia squash plants (technically a pumpkin) in one of my vegetable beds located in a more secure location. Instead of some homo sapien making off with my squash bounty, it looks like the neighborhood raccoons are having a gnocchi party somewhere. All I̵7;ve got to show for three Chioggia plants is one sm...

Legalize Baking!

Did you know that in California and many other states it̵7;s illegal to hold a bake sale? That a synagogue in Los Angeles got busted by the Health Department for hosting a bake sale? That you can̵7;t bake bread in a home kitchen and resell it? Obviously, we need to change this. In what looks like an economic climate that won̵7;t change for the better anytime soon, we need to encourage micro-business enterprises, foster a entreprene...

Cat Poop Compost Installment #2

Drum full o̵7; cat litter WARNING: Human waste and cat waste contain dangerous bacteria.  I fully believe that composting is a safe and sane solution to a waste stream problem–that̵7;s why I̵7;m writing about it, after all– I also know that it can be handled badly. (The stories we hear!) So please, read up on the subject before starting. You should have a solid foundation in regular compost to begin with, because...

Garden Design: Quantity vs. Quality

...that he most talented creative folks I̵7;ve met crank out lots of material. So how do we apply the quantity over quality principle to laying out a garden–especially since you often get only one chance a year to get it right? Above you see some of Kelly̵7;s ideas for the parkway garden we planted in the fall. I think it is at this first point in the process–when you̵7;re just sketching out ideas–when it̵7;s best...

Don̵7;t name those fish! “Making Flowers Into Perfume“ Build that still...

Rain Barrels

Constructing a cistern large enough to supply potable indoor water is an ambitious project involving pumps, filters, UV purifiers, and very large and expensive tanks. We don̵7;t want to discourage anyone from making an attempt at it, but for most urban homesteaders it won̵7;t be economical or practical given the space requirements and weight of thousands of gallons of stored water. Thankfully, there are simpler strategies for harvesting...
