Speaking of school gardens and astroturf; LA Ballona Elementary by us in Culver City recently cut down all of their perfectly healthy trees and replaced the one tiny piece of grass they had with astroturf (the rest of the schoolyard is asphalt and cement). I am still in a bit of shock that they would do that. My 3 year old is supposed to go their in a couple if years…..
Wow–that was, by the way, my elementary school! When I went there the only vegetation was in the inner courtyard. I noticed several years ago that they had added a lawn. Now they are back to mostly asphalt and a patch of astroturf. How depressing.
The blanket fort is another iteration of what I really want. The older I become, the more I want to be totally cocooned in my blankets. Now, I sleep with my head covered and dig out a little tunnel to fresh air. This last summer, I slept under a wool blanket covering me head to toe with the blanket under the sheet. In my head I construct structures in which to sleep. This one looks like a modern and smaller version of beds with carpets all around to provide privacy and warmth.
