Nesting Box Plans in SketchUp

SketchUp is a free and easy to use 3D modeling program. And users have created a library of 3D models you can download. Up until recently most of these models were not particularly useful to DIY urban homesteady types. Enter SketchUp model contributor Rick whose collection of models includes the chicken nesting box above, raised garden beds and a couple of other useful projects.

I’m really looking forward to seeing more open source project models like this and hope to contribute some myself. If you know of any other useful 3D models, leave a comment.

  1. Wow – this is awesome! I built my coop about 4 months ago, this sure would have been something useful

  2. Ana White has some great plans with cut lists and everything. Mostly indoor furniture but there is some great stuff in there!

  3. My coop is so tiny, and my chickens have been so resolute in pushing the nesting boxes (old Sessions beer boxes, or 5 gallon buckets) out that now I just give them big piles of shredded paper about once a week when I clean the coop, and they make nests. Brings a whole new meaning to Annie Lamott’s “shitty first drafts” — yep, that’s my new book in there — (also, old mortgage papers. If an identity thief is *that* resolute, well …)

  4. I’m with Tiny Texas Houses, and we will be unveiling some fully detailed sketchup models of our most popular houses starting next month. Even more exciting, I’m making a set of components that will enable anyone to design their own tiny house within ten minutes without any experience with sketchup. Like us on facebook, or follow our blog to get word when we launch these products.

  5. I have a similar nest box that we built, but the sloping roof is on the outside to help shed water. Unfortunately the hens have decided they’d like to perch on the edge with their butts in the nest, thus soiling the nestbox quite thoroughly. The roost is a tough sell I suppose. Sigh! :/
