  1. I am a retired literacy and ESL educator, with 27 years of experience teaching secondary-level students in public schools. During the last 10 years or so of my teaching career, I noticed a definite shift on the part of the powers that be, away from the humanities and toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). STEM, STEM, STEM, was the focus. Reading and writing instruction was to be geared to non-fiction, because that was the focus of the almighty tests. We were closely monitored to make sure that we didn’t deviate from STEM.
