  1. Many a car and truck in the South houses chickens. This is not purposeful. The chickens find the vehicles and call them home. Sometimes, the chickens’ owners might throw in a bale of straw. The vehicles are not decorated or have chicken wire to contain the birds. The owners would laugh at decorating.

    • Years ago, when my mom and dad’s community suddenly transformed from agrarian to young-professional-bedroom, a place where Hummers became the car of choice (especially laughable because there was not a hill or unpaved road to be found), Dad would sometimes joke that, come the zombie apocalypse, those Hummers would make exceptionally fine chicken coops. Maybe not as silly as we thought at the time.

  2. I’m trying to gin up some sympathy for your precipitation deficiency, I really am. However, in the last two weeks or so we’ve had more than three feet of snow. As much as I like winter, enough is enough. On a more practical level, if you can figure out a way to get it from Vermont to California, you’re welcome to as much as you want. The chickens would agree; they hate snow on their little feet.

  3. I love the painted bee houses. They remind me of a friend of mine who has made so many things in her house similarly both beautiful and functional.

  4. I suspect that constructing a bee house would be ideal for places that get long and cold winters. It might be good protection from bears too instead of the chain-link/electrified fences I’ve spotted around Montana hives.
