Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

rootsimplepodcastart

The combination of responsibilities this week and passing a kidney stone last night means that we’re calling a close to the first season of the Root Simple Podcast and planning new episodes for season two. That’s a pretentious way of saying there’s no podcast today. We’ll be back next week.

Who would you like to see as guests? How do you like the podcast so far?

  1. Kidney stones are not for the faint of heart. I hope it was not the first of many – best wishes to you.

  2. As a kidney stone survivor (is there a ribbon for that?), you have my sympathies.

As a fan of the podcast, you have my appreciation.

I love the format. It makes me imagine the two of you sitting around your kitchen table and having an intimate discussion with 80,000 of your closest friends. Looking forward to the new “season.”

I’d love to hear more about/from folks who are producing at home, home canning and storage, urban farming/gardening, backyard chickens, your vermiculture experience, urban beekeeping and more interviews with the same kind of wonderful folks you have had so far.

I’m afraid you will need to go to at least an hour per episode or more frequently per week.

    Or both.

Thanks again for all you do.

  3. I ditto all that Bruce has to say and add that I hope you are resting and recovering from your ordeal. I love all your podcasts and would like them to be closer to an hour longer also. I enjoy hearing about all the radical homesteaders and gardeners. Inspiring! Thank you.

  4. Thanks Cynthia, Bruce and Morninglory.

Erik is doing well today. This was his 4th encounter with a kidney stone–unfortunately–so while it was terrible, we knew what it was. It had to happen at 1AM, though. Ugh.

Thanks for the feedback, too. We can up the podcast to an hour if you folks really want to hear us blather for that long! There are so many good people out there to interview that we’re really excited for “season two.”

p.s. Bruce, we are sitting around our kitchen table when we record!

  5. I’ve heard there’s little to match a kidney stone for pain. I’m so sorry! I love the podcasts and hope for more of the great stuff you’ve been doing.

  6. I love the podcast! And while I’ve enjoyed all of your guests, my favourites are the “blathering” ones with just the two of you. Thank you.

  7. I love the podcasts, they are a great way to work and listen to something interesting I’ve never knew much about before. Definitely looking forward to Season 2!!

I’ve tried finding that surf rock song by Dr Frankenstein – can you put me out of my misery and just let us know what the name of the song is? Please? 🙂

    Thanks,

    John

  8. I really enjoy the podcast. I am an office worker so I often listen to the show while I am just getting stuff done.

I tend to like the shows where you have one guest that is with you most of the show talking about a special topic to them.

I have been kind of obsessed with the heritage apples and the quest to bring back old varieties that have been lost to our modern monoculture. I’d love to hear you interview Amigo Bob Cantisano of the Felix Gillet Institute. http://felixgillet.org/

  9. I would love to hear you two talk with Novella Carpenter (Ghost Town Farm) and her sister Riana. Her sister lives in France. Amazing talent….huge inspiration – she makes me feel lousy at how far behind I am in the self-sustainability world and my lack of skills and yet invigorates me to want to be so much more and try try try again!

    • That’s a great idea. Novella visited us a few years ago and we have great respect for her work and writing.

  10. I would like you to move to San Diego. I want to attend every event you appear at but LA is too far.

With that said, how about a soil expert speaking specifically on hugelkultur. Possibly Ben Kotnik from SD. I need to feel better about the 10 yards of top soil covering about 5 trees worth of logs.

    • We used to live in San Diego when we were in grad school at UCSD. We have many fond memories. And thanks for the suggestion.

  11. I love your podcast, I listen while I work at my desk or when I go for walks. I love the podcasts where you talk about your garden as I live in Southern California so I find all you information extremely helpful.

I saw the video on YouTube with the tour of your garden and I could not be more grateful that you had allowed us in to your home. I felt vindicated. Why you ask? well I will tell you, your garden and home were real, not like some manicured fake home that you see in those cooking shows in the Food Network, which always make me feel somewhat inadequate as if my gardening efforts and housekeeping techniques are severely lacking.

I would really appreciate if you could talk about what veggies you plant and in which time of the year. As you have mentioned a few times in your podcast, the weather in California is not like any other and I find myself somewhat confused when I look at the seeds packages and they say something like “plant 3 weeks before the last frost”. I think what frost??!!! Any way, please keep doing what you are doing! Thank You

  12. As an avid listener of your podcast (its great listening on Sundays when you’re working around the house) I can honestly say you guys are doing an awesome job. I’ve enjoyed both the episodes of you by yourself and with guests. I think all of the topics, no matter how ‘mundane’ are interesting. The topics that you guys talk about on the fly (cats, cleaning, etc.) are the most interesting to me.

I would love to hear more about your day to day diys. I own your book ‘Making It’ and would love to know how you currently incorporate those things into your life style, an update of sorts. I’ve also watched the video of you guys on Kristen Dirksen’s youtube and would love more information in terms of ‘how does your house hold run’. I know you guys make a pot of beans each week, what else do you eat on a normal weekly basis? What are other tricks do you use to make your budget stretch? Any topics on biking around for transportation and how to make that practical (in terms of toting things, being safe, weather, etc.).

Thank you for taking the time and effort to make these wonderful podcasts, I look forward to season two.
    Alyssa

  13. I for one would really, REALLY love to hear you guys do an interview with Josey Baker about his bread-baking passion! I’ve bought his book because of your recommendation and it’s the best book on breadmaking I’ve read so far. Since you guys are actively promoting his book, he should welcome the idea methinks 🙂
