Labor Day Possums

zUWnTl on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs

It’s the Labor Day holiday here in the US. As this CriterCam image indicates, however, our backyard possums are still at work.

Tackling a project today? Shaking off some playa dust? What are you up to this weekend?

  1. Washing tomatoes to lay out for ripening; I’ll can them sometime later this week. We had to pull the vines due to serious blight this year. I’ve already prepped the peppers; I’ll blacken the skin, clean them and puree them to fill ice cube trays for the freezer. I’m currently fending off Dracula with the amount of garlic I’m peeling to dehydrate (I save and/or plant the big cloves, and dehydrate the tiny ones to grind into granulated garlic). My house smells GOOD! ;^)

  2. Yard cleaning this weekend. Clearing one area in prep for a small patio and another area to begin a DIY retaining wall. We are completely re-landscaping the front and back yards, but have to stay focused on the immediate little projects, or it is so overwhelming.

And waiting for my beeswax to arrive so I can make my first batch of moisturizer.

  3. I have a soft spot for opossums. They have nasty-looking teeth, but they’re more bark than bite.

Most of our property is wooded so we are visited by a variety of wildlife. A couple of years ago, our porch became the nighttime hang-out spot for a group of opossums, whom we learned to recognize and then, of course, named. They never did any damage that we could see, so we just enjoyed watching them. Suddenly, they all disappeared and we really miss them. Our cats miss them, too.

    • i agree Donna, love the possums!!! sweet little things!!!! i find them so cute and never noticed any damage from them! there is a nature preserve a little ways away from here and i think that is where ours used to travel from – part of their loop included cutting through our yard and since i am a shift worker and night person, i regularly would catch sightings of them….i haven’t seen them the last couple years, not sure why. i, too, miss them.

  4. This afternoon we harvested onions, carrots, a meagre handful of potatoes, some half-ripe tomatoes. Then sat in the garden, enjoying our pond, drinking wine with our neighbour. A lovely way to spend Labour Day.

  5. I love possums. We lived about 1/2 mile form the coast at one point and had a big garden. We also had slugs and snails. One night I could hear a definite crunching coming from the garden. Turned out it was a possum eating snails. I kept her or him coming back by throwing raw onions in different places. Problems with snails and slugs disappeared.

  6. Hahahah Playa dust?! Are y’all burners? I’ve only been to regional burns in Iowa and MO, never made it to the Man and the playa. I love them though, so much creativity and love. Headed to the Iowa Burn the first weekend of Oct. Wish you could join us! 😉

    • We spoke at two regional events but have never made it to the big one. I’ve been curious to know how many burners read this blog–guess I know that at least one does–have fun in October!
