Homemade Teeccino

...e-hate relationship. Teeccino is a line of coffee substitutes based on carob, chicory, various nuts and flavors. It’s not one of those instant beverages like Pero: you prepare it by brewing it or steeping it in water. I found it at Whole Foods and tried a bag. I liked it, not because it tastes like coffee–it doesn’t–but it behaved in soothing, coffee-like ways. You can put milk in it. It looks like coffee and has a coffee-...

The Skunk Whisperer

...through the house. Here’s what my skunk trap-out looks like–excuse the bad picture and remember that it’s not a trap as the exit end is always open: I cut a board to fit around the trap-out and nailed it to the corners of the crawl space opening. The next step is to get a cartoon of myself and I’ll be making the big money. Here’s the Skunk Whisperer removing the Pepsi machine raccoons. As he put it, “They’...

We forget, in our age of individually plastic wrapped crap-ass single-sliced cheese, that the act of cheese making is a way to preserve dairy products and that it’s well within the capabilities of the do it yourself kitchen revolutionary. Here...

Maintaining a Worm Bin

...terly starve, you’re going to be okay. Our worm bin is pretty big (5 feet long), and made of pine boards.  It bears an unfortunate resemblance to a coffin, but it works wonderfully. I used plastic storage totes for my worm bins before we built this, and while those worked fine, I really like my big bin for two main reasons. The first is the size. It can take whatever I throw at it. It takes all my kitchen scraps, except for the really choic...

A Fast Bean Friday: Khichdi

...I learned about khichdi, a lentil and rice dish, very recently. Our friend Ari sent me a link to a basic recipe. It was nothing more than lentils, rice and cumin. I could not help but add some minced onion, but otherwise I followed this simple recipe and came out with something sort of bland but somehow extremely comforting and pleasant. So I looked up khichdi, and discovered that it is an Indian comfort food–perhaps the Indian comfort foo...

Stern Sprouted Wheat Vegan Cookie or Health Bar Type Things

...Then let it sit around at room temperature. Give it a rinse every morning and every night until it sprouts. Toss it around a bit so it aerates. Keep your hands and tools and containers very clean. Don’t let the sprouts get too long (i.e. too old)  when makin...

Dookie in the Tomatoes

...y one infected. 2. Support small family farms. Again, a small family farm could cause a salmonella outbreak, but it would effect far fewer people. Decentralization at all points in the agricultural supply chain is the solution to greater food security, not further concentration. Unfortunately our government is on the take from the big players and promulgates regulations that make it impossible for small family farmers to make a living. Read Joel...
