Happy New Year everyone!

I thought I’d first let you know how Kelly is doing. Recovering from open heart surgery, even for a young healthy person like Kelly takes time. Leaving the house for more than an hour is still a great effort. She’s not up for blogging just yet but we hope to record a podcast soon so that she can tell the story of her aortic misadventure.

Speaking of the podcast, I want to thank Eric Rochow of Garden Fork for recording an episode of the Root Simple podcast that I will put up tomorrow. The podcast features an interview with a very gifted photographer named Babs Perkins.

As for New Years resolutions, after trying both publicly announced resolutions (a big mistake) and privately held resolutions (also unsuccessful), I’ve decided to forgo the idea altogether in favor of a vague notion of just staying positive, grateful and keeping a sense of humor about life. We have a lot to be thankful for, in particular Kelly’s recovery and being surrounded by many kind and compassionate people including you, our dear readers.

Do you have plans for 2017? What would you like to accomplish this year?

  1. Just have to say those are fabulous non-resolutions. The particulars really don’t matter as much as the general attitude/outlook/approach to life.

Many thanks to you and Kelly for everything you do. Your blog is a major source of inspiration for me. Happy to hear Kelly is taking it easy and allowing recovery to take the time it needs.

  2. Yay, Kelly! Keep improving. 🙂

I distilled my resolutions down to “survive, progress, enjoy”, with attendant goals and an inspirational quote as a roadmap, which is from Rumer Godden:

“There is an Indian proverb or axiom that says that everyone is a house with four rooms, a physical, a mental, an emotional, and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time but, unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person.”

Some of the things I want to accomplish include working on resiliency skills like canning, gardening, pantrying; paying down debt, setting weekly/monthly/seasonal goals, and being mindful of the passing of the seasons.

  3. May you have a very blessed 2017. I am no longer making resolutions. Just intentions. To be kinder, calmer, more at one with my universe and those around me, to take better care of this vessel I am living in, and to stop worrying and fretting so much. I plan to read my plaque with Desiderata on it more often.
Best of life to both of you and many thanks for all the inspiration you have given me over the years.
    Namasté

  4. Great news on Kelly. That’s wonderful! Two friends had open heart surgery and each took six months to start feeling “normal” again. Take time, Kelly. Glad to hear you’re progressing well.

I don’t make resolutions. Instead, I choose a word to focus on for the year. After having two accidents 24 and 18 months ago my strength is gone. My word this year is Strong.

  5. I still get your blog feed via RSS into Thunderbird. It’s been way too long since I’ve caught up, and only last night did I hear about Kelly. I was floored. But I’m really happy that a) she and you all caught it right away and b) she’s recovering well. Thank the stars for all that.

I’m really curious about whether any of your guys’ stoic leanings came into play during the ordeal. Talk about a test. But my curiosity can certainly wait, indefinitely. Just wanted to mention it.

Keep doing what you’re doing. Like Jessica said above, what you do is an inspiration, even if I get behind. Thank you for keepin’ on keepin’ on.
