  1. Pottery wheel isn’t necessary to create a great little bowl, the pinch method would work fantastically. Just roll up the clay in a ball, not too big (if you go larger than a softball it is better to use coils), put your thumb in the center, and gradually pinch around the edge until you get the thickness and form that you like. I use a metal scraping tool to smooth it out. If you look up mata ortiz pottery, you’ll be absolutely blown away by how delicate, smooth and symmetrical the pieces are, and they are pit fired! You can pit fire at home. I can’t guarantee the piece will be water tight, but you’d be amazed at the beautiful colors that can come out naturally in pit fired pieces. Throw in some salt, seaweed leaves, even bananas for all those neat mineral colors to come through. 🙂 Great instructions on gathering clay though, I have been wanting to do that for aome time.
