Free Laundry to Landscape Plans

LaundryToLandscapeDiagram

Judging from our blog comments, the drought here on the west coast has people thinking about greywater. We’ve blogged about it many times before, but it’s worth repeating. Greywater expert Art Ludwig has excellent free plans on his website for putting together a laundry to landscape greywater system. I put this same system in at my neighbor Lora’s house a few years ago and just finished replacing our older greywater system with the one on Ludwig’s website.  It’s easy to install, inexpensive and legal to do without a permit in California.

  1. I would highly recommend the book and DVD! There’s some great material in there!

I just found the DVD when cleaning my office over the weekend and wound up watching it again last night!

  2. According to Ruth Goodman’s website, she does not use soap/laundry detergent in washing her clothes, claiming that 99% of all clothes will get clean that way. I have taken the low road on this and used a very small amount of laundry detergent. The clothes were clean. Plain water would even be better, and probably less “gray.”

I have also used 1/2 cup of clear, not sudsy, ammonia to wash the laundry. There is no odor when finished and the clothes were clean. this gray water may be the ticket.

A quick search suggests that ammonia is good for the garden. How much I do not know. I would research this further, but it certainly seems as though it is a possibility. Before “soap,” ammonia was used in commercial laundries, and many in the business kept using it after soap became popular. My daughter is ecstatic with using clear, not sudsy, ammonia alone in the washing machine, washing the dog’s blanket. All dog smell is gone, and the blanket is clean.
