This tiny garden is next to a liquor store at one of the busiest and ugliest intersections in Los Angeles–Glendale Boulevard and Berkeley Street.

  1. That is one of the saddest things I think I’ve ever seen. I guess it should make me hopeful that guerrilla gardening will change the Los Angeles landscape, but there’s just not enough corn to make it look any better, you know?

  2. That is such a hopeful sight, like someone made a wish, like someone wanted a sense of normalcy in a harsh world. The little box that defines the space, even though made of scraps is masterfully cut and square. Someone took a great deal of time and put thought into this little symbol of goodness and life.

    Did you take the picture?

  3. Love the little plot of corn. I’ve done the same thing in my front yard sunny strip: just a few plants of South American popcorn. I know they won’t produce seed, but I love them nonetheless.

  4. This small, humble garden in a filthy, anonymous, unyielding place is rebellious and inspiring. It’s like a window to what was sealed away and suffocated decades ago, a window of hope.

  5. Masanobu Fukuoka and Mahatma Gandhi would have be proud of those who used their hands to make things different for themselves and others. It is the beginning of things to come. Plant corn instead of firing guns and bombs.
