On Spam and Commenting

spam ad

Dear Root Simple Readers,

Our webmaster and designer, Roman is fighting a battle with spam. Thankfully, we have a good spam filter that catches almost all of it, so you don’t have to see the nasty stuff cluttering up the comments. However, the staggering number of incoming spam messages actually slows down the site. To combat this, we’ve been forced to add a CAPTCHA feature to protect the comments.

We know. It sucks. We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t have to. Let us know if you have any problems with it. This CAPTCHA filter asks you to do a simple math problem when you comment, in order to prove you’re not a spambot pushing prostate formulas or worse. Note that only unregistered commenters will need to use the CAPTCHA feature.

  1. This is an easy captcha! I was going to hate it if I had to hold the laptop within three inches of my nose to read a hazy number or try to figure out where one letter ended and the next started. I need this for my blog!

    • I’m glad to hear it’s not too bad. I hate those hazy word/number tests. I always fail the first try.

    • I hope you at least ran the above through a binary to text converter? 🙂

  3. Bummer that it came to this, but I’ve had to put a CAPTCHA on my comment section too. The only problem is that you’re selecting out only those commenters that can (in my case subtract 5-1) perform high level math, so it’s your own fault if you end up with a readership of only high level academic types and/or technical math gurus.

  4. haha – I saw this on another blog and thought it was a joke. thank goodness it isn’t trigonometry. I slept thru that class in high school.

  5. on the topic of the other SPAM – spam sushi….very popular in Hawaii and, as of late, has completely invaded my brain (additive junk food post…) and i havent even ever tried it but just googling it has attached it to my internal wiring and i have to struggle to resist running out and purchasing to make some for myself (and my cat – who i suspect would love it). NO I WONT GIVE IN – hand me the sprouts!
i was very worried about the math problem since ive never been good with math but i passed! so it builds ones self esteem while fighting spam! love it! i never pass on the first try with the murky letters/numbers!
