Help, I fell down a grain harvesting “youhole”

It’s the new Dancing With the Stars: the mesmerizing Hungarian Grain Harvest Competition (2010 edition). Trust me, it’s a lot harder than it looks. Using a scythe is a real talent. Thanks for Ken Sitz for tipping me off to this.

  1. fantastic! It’s always good to see how laborious the old hand-made way of Life is. I love wheat..but this shows why the potatoe is a superior food!!

  2. Interesting grain cradles on the scythes.

I hope to grow my own grain one day- that’s why I bought Gene Logsdon’s Small Scale Grain Raising, now in its second printing, and a Country Living grain mill (it adjusts from cracking grain- like my husband’s malted barley for beer brewing- right down to really fine flower).

We bought a 25 lb bag of organic hard white wheat and a 25 lb bag of organic soft white wheat from Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukie, OR and are getting used to grinding wheat every week, and getting used to pizza and pasta using whole wheat flour. It’s taking some getting used to, but we’re determined to do it!

  3. I love it that they are all wearing clean white shirts (although the women’s arms have got to be pretty itchy by the end of the day.) I’m fascinated by the twisting/tying thing they do to hold the bundles together.
