Photo Tour of the Root Simple Compound

New, as yet unnamed, kitten enjoying homebrew. Photo by Emily Ho for re-nest.

In case you’ve tired of the continuous coverage of Osama Bin Laden’s compound, how about a look at ours? Writer and photographer Emily Ho sure did a nice job putting together a photo tour of our crib over at re-nest in a post entitled “Kelly and Erik’s Urban Farm.”

Funny, when I look at our house I see all the work I have left to do, the chipped paint and broken concrete. Emily managed to capture the pretty stuff. Thanks should also go to Tara Kolla of Silver Lake Farms who helped us redesign the garden last fall.

  1. Such great photos! Emily really captured some special parts of your homestead.

…and I thought you named your kitten “homebrew”. I need to stop skim reading! 😉

  2. I really enjoyed that, and thanks for sharing! One question though: what kind of netting do you guys have over the beans and why, and do you think it would work on brassicas to keep those darn cabbage butterflies off?

I think ‘Homebrew’ makes a great name for a kitten. She’s the color of a very dark stout (maybe..)

  3. Paula,

The netting is just bird netting that I use to keep the chickens and skunks out of the veggies while they are getting established. To keep out cabbage butterflies I use row cover-Agribon-15 to be specific. In our hot climate I can only use row cover during the winter, though.

  4. Thanks for sharing guys! It looks great. The work always seems to go on, huh? We have an old farmhouse and 3 acres, and the to-do list never ends 🙂 I love that you called your style “hoarder chic”! Are you gonna trademark that term? Kidding.

  5. Really beautiful. I think the Apartment Therapy take captures the beauty and feel of your home. Thanks for sharing.

I still like Woad for the kitten. But in a house divided, I like Paula’s line of thinking and suggest Stout, good name for a hearty cat.

  6. Loved looking at your home! Thanks for sharing! i know what you mean about always seeing the work that needs to be done in your yard and home. I use a trick to help me enjoy my yard without seeing all the flaws…squint your eyes a little while viewing it..it helps blend all the details out and you just see a ‘Monet’ water color view! I’m always amazed at how much better it makes me feel. 🙂

  7. Hello! I just received your book Making It for Mother’s Day and I am so inspired. I’ve already started my sour-dough starter and looking into making my own everything. Thanks for the inspiration!

  8. Great to see your place.

Was that a rocket stove built out of bricks?
Any idea about where I might find some simple plans to make one myself?

    Thanks.
