How to clean a stained coffee cup

This is what it looked like fresh out the dishwasher. Ugh!

The sink post reminded me about this quick and easy tip. If you’ve got a stained coffee mug, baking soda will take that gunk right off.  Just sprinkle some baking soda in the mug, then wipe down the inside with a damp rag or sponge. The stain will give in on the first pass.

As I described in the sink post, the trick here is to keep the mug on the dry side, because baking soda scrubs best when only slightly damp. Your sponge or rag should be damp, but the mug shouldn’t have water in it.

Just a swipe with the magic powder does it.
I don’t like housework, but this sort of cleaning makes me happy.

  1. Thank you! This beats all the scrubbing I was doing. And here’s what’s funny, I did not notice that the mug of baking soda I keep in the shower (I wash my hair with it) was cleaner than the rest of the mugs in the house. Cheaper than dishwashing liquid, too.

  2. This is fantastic! I just tried this, and can’t believe how easy it is. Why have I never heard of this?! My appreciation is boundless :o)

  3. Discovered your blog from a Ladies Home Journal article. Saw your sink cleaning post and tried it. It works! Saturday I cleaned my kitchen and bathroom using only baking soda and vinegar. No chemicals. I have been married 44 years and have always cleaned with chemical based products. I loved the results with the soda/vinegar and loved how I felt using them even more. Thank you for the inspiration and information. Carol

  4. Good tip for cleaning porcelain without marring it.

But I call heresy! The cup should be stained enough that just adding hot water and letting it sit for 10 minutes gives you a drinkable cup of coffee!!! 😉

  5. I would love to give you a BIG hug right now! I hate cleaning my mug out because it gets sooo stained. I cannot wait to try this out as i am sure it will literally save me a few hours over the course of the next year.

  6. OMG you are awesome!!!!! I thought I was going to have to throw out my favorite coffee mug b/c it had gotten so gross looking on the inside, now it is sparking clean! Thanks!!!
