War-Era Food Posters from the USDA

I’m particularly fond of this one:

Funny that in many places local governments now forbid keeping backyard poultry!

  1. We are working to get the ban on backyard poultry reversed in our town of Berea, KY. I’d love for opponents who think our cause is new-age dippy-hippy stuff to see these- it’s really nothing new to have a few backyard hens!

  2. Our tiny municipality finally put something definitive on the city’s website, which in a way, is too bad. They allow it, but it’s a little more restrictive than I would have liked to see, although they allow up to five hens, but no roosters, which is no surprise. Interestingly, the page that spells out all the rules has a picture of a rooster, which is banned. Anyway, before they decided to decide, the city’s website only said about livestock that you couldn’t let them run around and be a nuisance, and you couldn’t run an abbatoir (sp?).

I wonder how long it will take them to say anything about goats?

At any rate, now I have the right to keep chickens in my back yard. Next spring, I’ll do just that.

  3. Wow, what a different world we live in now…Here in Bozeman, Montana, a group of committed citizens got together and overturned our ban last year. I’m grateful to them, as I just got my coop going this past spring and love my girls. They just started laying two weeks ago, yippee!

BTW, I’ve been enjoying and learning much on your most excellent site 🙂

  4. Thank you so much for posting this! I gave a lesson on WWI propaganda posters to a 7th-grade class this year — after spending several hours in the Library of Congress digital archives finding posters the kids would relate to. Now I’ll never have to do that again, AND I can redecorate my kitchen with vintage prints!
